Jam Round II- 22nd November,2007

The IInd round of Jam was conducted on 22nd November, 2007. After the YELL WEEK got over this was the first activity organized by YELL club. The main idea to hold round II was to involve more ppl in Jam. The results were pretty evident with 4 new faces participating in Jam who didn't participate in The YELL WEEK Jam. The six participants were- Vineeth, Amie,Vikarn,Naim,Ragamallika and Kaushik. Ram was the moderator for the event while Ajinkya and Sonali were the scorers. After 4 crazy rounds to everyone's surprise Naim piped Kaushik by a whisker to win the evnt. It was heartning to see new ppl getting interested in the event. YELL plans to hold more of such activities in the coming semester on regular basis to encourage more participation from MICians in literary events.

Day 5-YELL WEEK

Event- Pot Pourri

The last event of the YELL WEEK- pot pourri was an all out fun event. The event began with six teams participating in the prelims. The prelim round was the movie round.
Four teams proceeded to the finals. The first was the pictionary round in which one member was suppose to draw on the white board and the respective team was suppose to guess the word. The second round was the personality round in which each team was allowed to ask 20 questions to one of the teammates and
member and guess the personality. The last round was divided into two stages. Stage one was the movie round in which one member was suppose to enact the movie to the 2nd member while the 3rd person would sit the otherway. After the allotted time the second person is suppose to enact the same movie to the third person and he/she was suppose to guess the movie. The final stage was the ;Event' round. Here again one member was allowed to enatc with the other teammate and the 3rd participant is suppose to guess the event. The event included certain keyword which the team was suppose to get right.
On the whole the event was fun, though the level was a bit tough in order to raise the bar.The four teams that made it to the finals were-
Team A- Anisha, Anna & Shireen
Team B- Ajinkya, Pavithra & Amie
Team C- Ryan, Ranjini & Anjana

Day 4- YELL WEEK

Event 1- Spellathon
Organizers-Ragamalika, Adithi & Sonali
Day 4 of YELL WEEK can be easily described as the craziest so far. The evening kicked off with the spellathon. The first round was the prelim in which 13 people participated from which 6 advanced to next round. This was followed by 4 more rounds. After each round a participant was eliminated. Kaushik, Shwetha Arun and Prasana made it to the last round round. It was a very close event and on day 5 we will find out who becomes the master of spellings.

Event2- Jam
Organizers- Ram, Rohan, Ajinkya, Kerban, Elvin & Sameer

Arguably the craziest of all events. The event began with two HAMs (Half a minute). A total of 10 partcipants took part in this. The number was brought down to 6 for the main JAM. And from here began a series of crazy rounds. The 2nd round was the most funny one in which every participant after objecting to the speaker had to sing a funny poem for one of audience of the opposite gender. That poem ended with the line "I want a big wet kiss'. The lst round was even better because in this round if a participant objected then the person next to him would get a chance to tell the right reason which made the round even more confusing and funny. The 6 finalists were Ranjini, Nikitha,Vineet,Amie,Kaushik and Nithya. This event went down the wire and it was very close competition when it came down to teh results. The audience was engrossed through out making it a popular event.Saturday evening find out who wins the JAM.

Debate Competition-24th October,2007

Day 3: Block and Tackle

Block and Tackle

Judges: Neeta ma’am and Ravi Sir
Organisers: Sonali and Ridhima

Ahoy there!!! Talk crap and here you go… You will be on the way to victory… Or so you think!!! Did I just contradict myself?? Oh yes I did!!! When you speak you are supposed to say things that won’t contradict your previous statements. But Block and Tackle is an event where you are supposed to contradict yourself and that also in style.

Eight participants were battling it out with their witty humour and fast transititions .The event started with Ami talking about promises that were never kept, while Aashica talked about the famous topic of “She Loves me, She Loves me Not” with ‘Personal examples from YELL”!!! Nilanjan talked about boring conversations and so the story went… The topics might sound absurd but they were actually “designed” to test the participants humour, presence of mind and confidence. The audience was quite lively as usual.

The first round was one without anyone asking the participants to block or tackle. But the second round started with Ryan asking the participants to block and to tackle. This was the fun part of the competition. After hearing Ryan do the “Block and Tackle” thing, Ami said that she could not do this anymore!!! The people sitting as the audience were quite amused and were loving it!!!!

The event as a whole was a great one. Humour, presence of mind and intelligence were the winners at the end. The participants gave a new meaning to “cracking jokes seriously”. And after the event, people were seen laughing at the wierd things that were said by the participants.

Day 2- YELL WEEK

24.10.2007

Debate

Judges: Mrs. Kinnari, Dr. Kushal Kumar and Karthik Iyer

The judges were class apart themselves. Mrs. Kinnari was a faculty at MIC for over five years. She was known among her students as some one who used to teach through debates. Dr. Kushal Kumar is known for his knowledge on varied topics. And, Mr Karthik is a University level debater who represents TAPMI at various high level competitions.

So here it is- The debate competition at the Yell Week. Many people were waiting for this event because this event happens to be one of the most fought for events. Many try to get into the team, but only the best are selected. But again, the people who get selected are just a little fierce in expressing their opinions, be it for the good or bad.

The issue for this year’s debate was “Is the bi party system better than the multi party system”. Looking at the arguments coming from the participants, it’s quite hard to think that they are college going students. In fact, out of the six participants, just one person (Sherin) happened to be from First Year MSCOM. The rest participants were from First Year and Second Year BAJC. It’s quite tough to comprehend the fact that college going students can be so politically aware. The kind of examples that were being used, were just too brilliant. Legally speaking, none save one, was eligible to even drive!!! But man, did they know how to drive the nation towards better governance and functioning!!!

When the debate started, the participants looked quite confident while speaking. But anyone can speak when not being questioned. But the real test is when they are questioned back for the arguments that they made. This happened during the rebuttal round. Judges bombarded the participants with some real tough questions. But it turned out that the participants were just too confident about their sides. They were quite clear in their heads about their stand on the topic.

The team of Sherine, Prathma and Nithya stood for the bi party system. And the team of Sonali, Ajinkya and Ragamallika constituted the team that stood against the two party systems.

At the end of the day, both the teams were happy with the discussion and also with the audience. The audience was an excited lot. The debate ended with Sameer, the Club President thanking all the judges and the audience and not forgetting the participants. This debate was a healthy one as one of the judges, Dr. Kushal Kumar said,” Am happy that you took such a topic as now the students know about both kinds of systems.” His words were quite encouraging, both for the participants and the organizers.

Day 2- Schedule

One of the main events of YELL WEEK - Debate would be held on day 2 of YELL WEEK. Six participants divided into two teams consisting of 3 members each would battle it out head to head by putting across their points through heated arguments to convince the judges and the audience. The topic for the debate is- "Biparty system is better than multiparty system". So come and witness the mother of all arguments on day 2 of YELL WEEK.

Venue- MIC Lobby
Time- 5-15 pm

Day 1- YELL WEEK begins

Event 1-Mock Press

The YELL week was formally declared open.

Judges-KK, Buroshiva Sir, Sameer

There was a tingle of anticipation in the air; many excited faces could be seen milling around the lobby just before the call for registration was made. Once the event was on, the audience as well as the participants were looking forward to the proceedings. There were two kinds of people: people who had never seen a mock press and some who had seen mock press’. Suffice to say that, what would follow would turn out to be a unique experience for both.

The event was divided into two rounds. The participants would play first the role of an interviewer and then that of an interviewee during the course of the event. The first character, Amitabh Bachchan was played by Meera. And she did manage to scare people. But everything was taken well by the participants as true sportsmanship would demand.

In this round the participants were asked to interview celebrities which seemed to amuse the audience. As the event progressed, it got interesting and eventually became out of the ordinary. Many times witty replies were exchanged. They were laughed off sportively, by the audience and the participants.

Serious issues were dealt in a funny way during the first round. Personalities like Rajnikant, Amartya Sen, Tom Cruise were interviewed by the participants with panache and wit. But the highlight of the event turned out to be the second round. In this second and last round, the participants who were previously the interviewers got to sit on the other side of the tabe by being the interviewee. The judges threw questions at the participants while they volleyed good answers that were just as hard hitting.

The very first of the second ‘interviewee’ round, was a tirade of questions and answers between the most entertaining Laloo Prasad Yadav and the equally enterprising judges. A hearty laugh later, the mood was set for a set of heated and yet extremely engaging ‘conversations’ if they could be called that between the participants and the judges posing as very persistent reporters. The personalities that followed, included Shilpa Shetty, Narendra Modi, M.F. Hussain, and George Bush.

Shilpa Shetty was questioned about her sudden celebrity status and her flop films other than the controversial Gere kiss.
Narendra Modi was questioned about the condition of Gujarat and his new slogan.
M.F. Hussain was asked about the relevance of his paintings to the common man and about the abuse of art in general.
Mahmoud Ahmedejad was questioned about his country being the stage for a third world war and he returned that if it was to be it would be and that if the USA treated his country as dirt beneath their feet, he would retaliate despite his policy of peace.
George Bush was asked about the American public developing a sense of discontent towards his policies especially the wars.
Anil Ambani was questioned about his family dispute and why he doesn’t use a pipeline rather than trucks which congest traffic.
Shoiab Akhtar was told that it is strange that he’s either in a controversy or injured all the time.

The claps and the laughs, that could be heard throughout, were more than enough evidence that the event was not only liked by the participants and the judges but the audience enjoyed it the most! It ended on a thankful note to the volunteers (Meera, Anna, Shankar, Vishnu, Kaushik, Ajinkya), organisers (Priya, Anisha, Ajiknya), the very responsive audience and last but not at all the least, the participants.
